The past few weeks I had the displeasure of being surrounded by the future of mankind; adolescents (don’t ask). Normally, this is not to great a problem, they tend to be honest (to the point of idiocy), always ready with an opinion, and generally tend to have a great sense of humour (if handpicked carefully). Unfortunately, I noticed another trend; I can safely say that about 70% of those in age class 17-20 are in bad shape.
The vague concept ‘bad shape’ takes two forms; fat or scrawny. Fat is unpleasant to look at, but in all honesty, it is probably more healthy than lacking any sort of body fat. Fortunately for me, I live in a country where being fat is still considered bad and hence they are uncommon (not rare, but uncommon). Hence the vast majority of youngsters I saw lacked both fat, muscle and a spine. In fact, it took serious effort not to laugh watching young male engineering students take their shirts off to display their awesome physique. Note that I am specifically referring to males here, seeing as skinny girls are kind of the beauty icon in our society. But for them also counts; if you look like you’ll break every bone in your body when falling down a doorstep, you might consider buffing up just a little bit.
Anyway, back to the shirtless males. For those who don’t know it; there is a very simple way to differ between no-fat or toned. Granted, in some cases it can be hard to see the difference at first glance due to the results being the same for both; visible muscles. The solution is simple; look at the guy’s chest. Men store the majority of their fat around their belly, therefore, if a guy has a flat stomach (possible visible abs), look at his chest. Does his chest look like that of a slightly overweight man? Bingo, this means its chuck-full of hardened muscle. Now if that same man has a flat stomach and a flat chest, he simply has neither flesh nor fat. Sounds easy? It is, go to the beach and try it out.
On a side note; in 10 days of strolling around at university, I only spotted 5 (I counted them) black guys. Make of that what you want.
