We all know this planet is going to warm up a little sooner or later. And at this rate it’ll be sooner rather than later. This is already happening, it is a fact. I do not know for sure if it is a natural phenomena or a human-induced one, and I honestly don’t care at the moment, humanity will survive anyway and that is the ultimate priority. With that out of the way, Live Earth is one of the most stupid projects conceived this year. In fact, it is nominated for the Downs Award for Idiocy and Hypocrisy of 2007 together with Windows Vista and the Virginia Tech ‘Massacre’.
But let us focus on Live Earth for now. First of all, for those of you living in a cave and clueless what I’m talking about (like I was before Evil informed me), Live Earth is a series of world-wide concerts held on 07-07-07 in various major cities around the globe. It is aimed to raise awareness about global warming (I think) and other environmental issues no doubt. Now this is where everyone’s logic-clockwork should give a few ticks. Because yes, you are right; holding 11 concerts at the same time is quite a drain of power, let alone the amount of jet-fuel required to fly the goddamn performers all over the goddamn globe.
But that’s not the real problem here. That lies, as the title might imply, with the mindset of the performers/organisers of this planet-saving miracle; we do not care. That’s it. We simply do not care. We are humans in developed countries (if you can read this anyway), and we honestly are not interested in anything in the world unless it directly affects us. Hell, I am even guilty of this myself, we all are! And I am willing to bet my life savings on the fact that Live Earth changes nothing.
The next mental issue is with the performers/organisers of said event. As mentioned before, quite a significant amount of jet-fuel was burned to fly all the performers around from all corners of the Earth. Yet I know for sure that most, if not all of them, walked off the stage with a feeling they actually contributed to ‘solving global warming’, while they have done nothing at best and speed it up a little at worst. Finally, we had a few would-be performers refusing to participate for the reasons of hypocrisy (flying in private jets would strain the environment even more). While they are technically right, they would do wisely not to see themselves as paragons of virtue. Do they think their best-selling albums on CD magically fall out of the sky? These have to be produced as well, which costs energy, which strains the environment. Do not confuse these people with heroes.
On a final note, just something my countries press apparently just made up; according to the local newspaper, about 2 billion people tuned in to Live Earth. Now I might not be the brightest bulb on the planet, but I’m pretty sure that’s a lie. To clarify; that would mean that a little more of the total population of India, Europe and the United States would all have been watching Live Earth (ignoring time zones). As if.
