I know you’ve all made up an excuse before. We all do it when we don’t feel like taking responsibility and I think there is no harm in that.
Some of us are really good in it (like me) and some of us fail every time. Now if you are one of those who fall in the latter category then pay attention. If you follow these guidelines your excuses will make your boss (or whoever you’re telling the excuse to) pray he never doubted that you didn’t have a good reason.
What is an excuse and why do make them up?
An excuse is an easy way to not take responsibility for your actions. For example when you are late for work you might say: I had a flat tire. Now that, of course, is a terrible excuse. Its over used. Even when it is true your boss still wouldn’t believe you. So you have to make sure its original and almost never used before. And more importantly that YOU have never used before.
When you are riding your bike without a backlight and the cops tell you to stop and they write you a fine, what do you say? Do NOT say your backlight was stolen, because they WILL tell you that you should’ve walked instead. A good excuse never has holes: ‘You should’ve’ or a ‘You could’ve’. Because for every hole you have to make up another excuse.
A good excuse is always obvious. ‘John, why are you late?’ ‘There was an accident and I had to call an ambulance and stay with the injured’ ‘Of course John, you did a good thing’!
See? Its original, you can’t say: “You should’ve done this…” or “You could’ve done that”, AND its obvious you stay with the injured. See now that is a good excuse!
General tips
Here are some general tips you should take in mind:
- Make sure you’ve made up your excuse, and atleast said it once out loud or in your head, before you talk to your boss/teacher/whatever. Don’t STUTTER and be CONFIDENT.
- If you can’t think of a good excuse that doesn’t have holes, then make sure you close the holes before you talk to your boss!
- Make sure there was no alternative. In regard with the accident example above, no morally good boss is gonna say ‘should have left the injured to rot, you’re fired!’
If you follow these simple rules you should be fine. If you decide to use them, let me know how it went!
