I know that I have written many a ranting article about various topics. Most were perhaps a little harsh if you can not bear the truth, but be assured that I mean every single word of them. That said, today I will write a positive piece of text, for it has come to my attention that a great man lived among us. A forgotten man, unfortunately, but a great man still. I speak of Jack Churchill.
A lot of what I’m going to say is going to sound rather odd, even unbelieveable if you are a sceptic. So in the case you do not believe a word of what I have said when I am done, just google him yourself and have all your self-esteem blown to the little ignorant fragments that they are. Now, on with the story.
‘Fighting’ Jack Churchill was a British soldier during the Second World War. That is not that special. Jack was a captain in the British army (later a lieutenant colonel). Again, not that special. Jack was also a member of a commando strike team. Admirable, but hardly worth of my praise. The real kicker here is Churchill’s weapon of choice; the longbow.
I’ll stress that. Jack Churchill was a commando who fought with bow and arrows during WWII. In fact, his entire armament consisted of a bow, arrows, a claymore and bagpipes (probably a gun too). Churchill’s heroics include, but are not limited too:
- Ambushing a German patrol in France, the order to attack was an arrow hitting the German commander.
- Leading Operation Archery (Norway), which destroyed an Axis battery and eliminated an Axis garison. Note; during the beginning of the assault, Jack played ‘March of the Cameron Men’ on his bagpipes.
- Taking 42 prisoners of war in one night (with help from a single rifleman).
- Escaping from a concentration camp. Twice.
- After WWII, he fought in Palestine where his squad (12 men) were responsible for saving 700 citizens.
- Serving as an instructor for air- and landbased warfare.
Jack Churchill died in 1966. Truly he was a great man and it is a shame that his name is not more known throughout the world.
Jack Churchill, we have not forgotten you!
Praise Fighting Jack, Drop us a line!
